AIgitation is a new crypto
1 April 2025
Well, AI made a huge leap forward in recent years. Technologies evolve, and Jevon's paradox hits again. We have more resources, more efficiency, but consumption keeps growing because there is always a way to do something easier by wasting more resources.
The game industry is a good representation for the case. Our tech nowadays is several times more powerful than it was back in 2010, yet the quality of new game releases is barely keeping up to industry standards. Sometimes new titles fall behind similar-scale titles that were released 10 years ago. Which basically means devs are doing the same job, by using far more resources. Why does it happen? Well, because now they have spare power that allows them to ignore mistakes they make during development. Memory leak? We have more than enough to ignore it for average play session. Permanently rendering entire world? GPU got this, no worries. Frame drop? Bump AI interpolation on it.
Now, I'm unwilling to discuss Jevon's paradox. It was always there and it will always be (well, unless we accidentally develop hive-like mind and consciousness). What I really want to share is the AI hysteria happening around. There is a huge ongoing "vibe coding" controversy happening in social media. Linkedin is filled with clickbait posts. One half claims "AI can save 50% time on development, while increasing it 250% on debugging. The other half praises X LLM and prophesizes death for non-prompt and junior/middle engineers.
Well, guess what? You ought not to push the limits. We're taking all fun out of programming and replacing it with "successful success" and "efficient efficiency" for no good reason at all. Besides, AI is just a tool. If it works, use it, if it doesn't, don't try to fit a square peg into a round hole. It's just that simple. Don't make it new crypto-like speculation.
AI is a cool thing that brings cool features to the table, but don't force it to be your future. We have more than enough AI-powered cloud toilet brushes.
